How is it that a small country like the Netherlands, with only 16 million inhabitants, is the 15th largest economy in the world? Passengers flying into Amsterdam Schiphol Airport will begin to understand something of the economic strength of this small country on the North Sea. Stretching deep inland, there is nothing but flat green polders, criss-crossed by a lattice of dead straight canals glittering in the morning light. One fifth of the country – the most densely populated in Western Europe and formed from the delta of the river Rhine – has been recovered from the sea. Not a strip of land is left unused.
